Change of tack for Transat boat
Monohull yacht Hellomoto
Humphreys changed course to protect Hellomoto
Devon skipper Conrad Humphreys has been forced to change his route in the Transat single-handed race from Plymouth to Boston.

His decision has been taken because of high seas and winds of 50 to 60 knots.

His 60ft monohull, Hellomoto, remains in 8th position, nearly 150 miles behind the leading boat.

But Hellomoto has not suffered any damage and the skipper has decided to tack south in order to preserve the boat and his materials.

Every wave made me cringe
Conrad Humphreys
The 31-year-old Plymouth man is one of the UK's hopes in the race.

He said: "Hellomoto was thumping off waves nearly half her length.

"Every wave made me cringe, as the ear-splitting sound of carbon slamming against the ocean was taking its toll."

Humphreys said his decision to change course was not an easy one to take, but he is hoping that Hellomoto will be able to pick up the southerly winds from the next area of depression.

Virbac, the yacht which had been leading the race, was dismasted and suffered a broken boom after being caught by a rogue wave.

The current leader of the race is Mike Sanderson on Pindar Alphagraphics.
