Council appeals against tax cap
Torquay
Torbay Council had planned a council rise of 9.9% before the cap
Leading politicians from Torbay Council are meeting local government minister Nick Raynsford on Monday to argue against being capped.

The authority is under threat of being forced to reduce council tax bills, which the government says are too high.

At the end of April the government announced it was going to cap Torbay's spending.

But the authority is not happy about the move, partly because it has been causing unexpected problems.

Direct debits

Nearly 200 people have cancelled their council tax direct debits.

They are thought to be concerned about paying too much, even though the council has insisted nobody will end up out of pocket.

If Torbay's spending is capped, direct debits will be adjusted downwards, although the authority hopes it will not come to that.

On Monday councillors will be in London to put their case to local government minister Nick Raynsford, against being capped.

A final decision should then be announced in a few weeks.
