Off-road vehicles face crackdown
Trail bike riders
Offenders will be prosecuted under the Wildlife and Countryside Act
Police in Devon are cracking down on drivers of off-road vehicles who damage important wildlife habitats.

Officers are to work closely with officials from English Nature and the Forestry Commission to protect sites of special scientific interest.

The police say some of the areas worst affected are Dawlish Warren, commons in east Devon, Braunton Burrows and parts of Haldon Forest near Exeter.

Four-wheel drive vehicles, motorbikes and quad bikes are causing the damage.

Officers say they are to work with English Nature to prosecute offenders under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.

The police say sites of special scientific interest, which include heathland and sand dunes, need protection.

They say the sites are crucial for plants and animals and it is important they are safeguarded for local people and for Devon's tourist industry.
