Conrad Humphreys, winner of the BT Global Challenge is taking part |
Preparations are under way for the 12th Transat single-handed yacht race, due to set off from Plymouth. Plymouth Yacht Haven is open to the public for the race with an impressive array of ocean racing machines, including eleven 60ft trimarans.
The Royal Navy will be setting up a submarine simulator as part of their display, and Renault will be showing one of their Formula One racing cars.
The race will be started on Bank Holiday Monday by Anna Kournikova.
Local attention will be focused on Plymouth skipper Conrad Humphreys, 31, and his Motorola-sponsored monohull yacht Hellomoto.
Humphreys in 2001 became the youngest ever skipper to win the BT Global Challenge yacht race.
He said: "There has been a fantastic sense of urgency in the team's attitude in preparing Hellomoto for the Transat race.
"We knew we were up against a tight schedule and to complete such an extensive refit in time was down to careful planning and determination on everyone's part.
"I am really looking forward to getting out to sea now and putting Hellomoto through her paces."
