Rail shake-up plans put forward
Train
One suggestion is for more services between Salisbury and Exeter
Radical plans for the future of railways in the South West are being unveiled on Tuesday.

The "25-year vision" is the result of work carried out by the Western England Rail Passengers Committee.

The report looks at the future of rail services in the region and follows consultation with the public and local authorities in the area.

One of the proposals is a new parkway station outside Okehampton to provide a link to Exeter and London.

Own study

Currently anyone heading for Okehampton or Launceston must complete their journey by bus and a new station would remedy that.

Another suggestion is for more services between Salisbury and Exeter, making the through line to Waterloo a better alternative route to the capital.

There are also calls for the development of a Plymouth travel-to-work network, which would see Tavistock connected to Plymouth, via the existing Bere Alston railway line.

The Strategic Rail Authority, which has responsibility for changes to the rail network, says they will read the report with interest and are currently undertaking their own study of the region's rail network.
