The virus is highly contagious |
Up to 50 members of staff at a Devon hospital have been affected in the latest outbreak of the Norwalk virus. Six wards at Plymouth's Derriford Hospital are under special restrictions to protect against the virus which causes diarrhoea and vomiting.
The strain of the virus is described as particularly virulent and has affected staff badly.
Hospital managers are appealing to the public not to visit the hospital if they have recently been feeling unwell.
Jenny Williams, Infection Control Nurse, said: "The situation in the hospital is reflective of what's happening in the community generally.
"This strain of the virus is particularly virulent and it has hit our staff badly.
""We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank all our patients and visitors for their patience and co-operation."
She said if visitors were unsure about whether to come in they should phone the ward or department they are due to visit beforehand.
