People are asked to look after their drinks when out |
A survey of people in Plymouth's clubland at the weekend has suggested around half had some experience of drink spiking. The survey was commissioned by the government's Drug Action Team.
On Friday and Saturday nights a team of researchers spoke to young people about their perception of drink spiking as a problem in the city.
Researchers behind the first survey in the South West say the results appear to show there is a major problem.
A total of 235 interviews were carried out and of those questioned 142 said that either they, or someone they knew, had had their drinks interfered with.
The researchers say the responses will now be looked at more closely before a report is drawn up for local policy makers and the Home Office.
Sue Warren from the Government's Crime and Drugs Team in Plymouth said: "Of the answers that we got, about half would suggest that they knew of drinks being spiked.
"An awful a lot of people have reported it to the police, to Accident and Emergency hospital staff and, interestingly, Ministry of Defence Police."
