Hospital considering smoking ban
Derriford Hospital
More than 2,300 people responded to the Derriford survey
A survey into banning smoking at the South West's biggest hospital has given strong backing to the idea.

The trust which runs Derriford Hospital in Plymouth is looking at phasing in the move in three years, but wanted to see what the public and staff thought.

The survey found broad support for a ban, especially within the hospital buildings themselves and outside the main entrances.

If a ban is agreed, it is likely to be phased in by September 2007.

Report discussion

The consultation was carried out during January and February.

A questionnaire was attached to staff payslips, with about 1,200 people responding.

Surveys were also sent to the Plymouth Residents' Panel, which consists of a representative section of the city's population. About 1,100 people filled them in.

There was also a display in the hospital foyer where people could record their comments in a book.

Although the survey found support for a ban within buildings and at main entrances, the public were less convinced about a ban in all of the hospital's grounds.

The report will go before the hospital trust board for discussion.
