Hospital hoping to keep its stars
Derriford Hospital
There has been increased pressure on the hospital's services
Plymouth's Derriford Hospital is hoping to avoid a fall in its star rating as a result of a projected 7.5m overspend.

The hospital has been under financial strain because of increased pressure on its services.

It follows an increase in emergency admissions of over 11% and efforts to attempt to meet targets for operations and other treatment.

Millions of pounds have already been saved by reducing staff numbers and reducing reliance on agency workers.

The overspend represents just over 3% of the total hospital budget, a level which is considered significant.

Financial management is one factor which is taken into account when determining a hospital's league table star rating.

The hospital is hoping that its successes in other areas will enable it to retain its current two-star rating.
