The RSPCA has condemned an attack on a seagull after it was shot in the neck with a crossbow in Cornwall. The herring gull was put down after it was found with a six-inch crossbow bolt in its neck at the harbour in Newquay on Monday.
The bolt could have been lodged in the bird's neck for up to two days, preventing it from eating and drinking.
The injured bird was found alive but in great distress by a member of the public, who contacted the charity.
RSPCA animal collection officer Felicity Cross said: "To my knowledge this is the first known case of a crossbow attack on a seagull in the Newquay area."
Devon and Cornwall Police have also been informed because of the potential danger posed by the use of a crossbow in public.
Anyone with information about the attack is asked to call the RSPCA's cruelty and advice line on 08705 555999.
