'Right to roam' on 'closed' tor
Vixen Tor
Vixen Tor has been closed to the public since May 2003
The government has paved the way for the reopening of one of Dartmoor's most popular landmarks.

Vixen Tor, at Merrivale, is included on new official maps published on Thursday, showing areas open to the public under "right to roam" laws.

The tor is on private land but its previous owner allowed public access.

However, when the land was bought by farmer Mary Alford in May 2003, she said she had been advised to close it by her insurers.

The Countryside Agency has included Vixen Tor on maps of Devon it has published, showing areas of land where walkers will have access under "right to roam".

Mrs Alford has previously said there was no legal public right of access to the site and that she had been recommended by her insurance company to close it as she could be liable if anyone injured while walking or climbing.
