An investigation has been launched into the prison death |
A Devon mother has been found dead in prison four days after she was jailed for child cruelty. Stephanie Horrocks, from Plymouth, was found dead at Eastwood Park Prison in South Gloucestershire at 0710 GMT on Sunday.
The 27-year-old was serving two years after admitting child cruelty following the death of her nine-month-old baby boy.
An Avon and Somerset Police spokeswoman said a post-mortem had revealed her death was not suspicious and the matter had been passed to the coroner.
New inmate
A date for an inquest has yet to be set.
A Prison Service spokeswoman said that, as with any death in prison, an investigation had been launched.
There were no indications the death was self-inflicted, but no one else was being sought in connection with her death.
She said Horrocks had not been on suicide watch.
"She would have been supervised like any other new inmate," she said.
Medical tests
Plymouth Crown Court last week heard Horrocks, and her partner, 33-year-old Mark McAndrew, had ignored the pleas of friends to get medical help for nine-month-old Perrin Barlow.
The court heard that medical tests carried out after Perrin's death showed he was suffering from bronchial pneumonia, was underweight and had signs of dehydration.
McAndrew, who was not the boy's natural father, was jailed for 15 months.
Horrocks and McAndrew, from Camperdown Street in Plymouth, admitted one charge of cruelty to a child under 16 years of age.
Horrocks had a previous conviction for assaulting another of her children in 1996.
