Pensioner Sylvia Hardy says her council tax fight will go on

Retired social worker Sylvia Hardy, 71, finished last in the race between four candidates in the Exeter ward of St David's and Pennsylvania.

She entered the by-election after a �91 liability order was made against her for council tax she refused to pay.

Miss Hardy, who has vowed to go to jail rather than pay the sum, said: "I am sure we will have a try again."

She added: "It is hard work when you do not have the backing of these political parties... the money, the resources or the people.

"We will still go on the with the campaign to get council tax abolished."

Miss Hardy faced a �644 council tax charge on the Exeter flat where she lives alone, after last year's tax rose nearly 18%.

But she insisted she would only pay an extra 1.7% - the equivalent of the rise in her state pension.

She was later given a liability order by city magistrates.
