Region's rivers on flood alert

The Environment Agency is warning rivers could flood
Flood warnings have been issued for several rivers in Devon and Cornwall after a weekend of heavy rain.

The Environment Agency has warned more rain is on the way which will swell rivers already full to the brim.

The Agency has flood warnings in place on eight rivers across the region - the Upper and Lower Axe, the Clyst, Neet, Otter, Tamar, Taw and Torridge.

It has also placed lesser flood watches on five more rivers - the lower parts of the Rivers Culm and Exe, the middle part of the Tamar, and parts of the Otter and Ottery.

The BBC Weather Centre said periods of heavy rainfall were expected to last all week, although temperatures would be mild.

A weather spokesman said: "The problems are with all the rain that is coming through in the next 72 hours, with probably some flooding in places.

"At the moment the flooding looks like being centred across Wales and the South West on Monday and Tuesday.

"There is some heavy rain through eastern England but it's not going to be as heavy as Wales, the South West, Cumbria and south west Scotland.

"Until Wednesday night there's band after band of rain moving through.

"Across the west there will probably be between three and four inches of rain before Wednesday night."

The rivers with flood warnings in place include the lower part of the River Axe from Axminster to Axmouth; the upper part of the River Axe from Winsham to Axminster; the River Clyst from Broadclyst to Clyst St Mary; and the River Neet from Woolstone Mill to Bude.

The River Otter from Fenny Bridges to Budleigh Salterton; the River Tamar from Tamarstone to Polson Bridge; the River Taw from Sticklepath to Newnham Bridge; and the River Torridge from Dolton to Bideford are also affected.

Pump water

Flooding is also causing problems on the A3052 at Colyford in East Devon.

Heavy rain led to properties in Devon being flooded late on Sunday afternoon.

The fire service was called to pump water out of houses in Plymtree, Ottery St Mary and Axminster.

Devon County Council's control room said it received about 80 calls regarding flooding.

Homeowners worried about river levels are urged to monitor the Environment Agency's flood warnings, either online or via floodline on 0845 988 1188.
