Devon does not yet have any turbines

Last year plans were submitted to build three turbines on a site at Higher Beckett near Holsworthy in north Devon, but they were rejected.

The company behind the proposals, National Wind Power has now announced it has withdrawn its appeal against that decision.

It is also withdrawing plans for a windfarm at another site near Holsworthy.

Other proposals for sites in Devon are still being pursued through the planning process.

The government said in its energy White Paper released in February 2003 that it wants 10% of energy to come from renewable sources by 2010 and 20% by 2020.

Although wind turbines are now a familiar site in Cornwall, there are still no turbines in Devon.

Both north and west Devon have been recommended as good locations for the farms.

The British Wind Energy Association said on Wednesday that it was "disappointed" by the withdrawal of the plans.
