Many teachers believe it is unfair to base tables on final assessments |
Primary schools in Devon have received mixed results in the latest government league tables to be published. Four schools appear in the top 200 in England, but three more are in the bottom 200.
Among those celebrating are West Hill Primary in Ottery St Mary, Holbeton Primary School, and Ermington and Stuart Road Primary Schools in Plymouth.
However, two Plymouth schools - High Street and Ford - were classed in the bottom 200 schools in the country, along with Bradley Rowe Middle School in Exeter.
The tables take into account the percentage of children achieving Level Four in English, maths and science.
The results will again raise the question of the necessity for exams and league tables for 11-year-olds. Despite the success of her own school, Carol Wheeldon, who is joint headteacher at Stuart Road, admitted she was not a fan of the league tables.
She said it was unfair to base the ratings on a final assessment, with results often being affected by good fortune on the day.
"Some parents, when they come to our school looking for a place for their young children, do take notice of the league tables and ask us questions about them," she said.
"But we know that colleagues in neighbouring schools are working just as hard as we are and in some years the results are not very good.
"That is just how it is sometimes."
