Crisis talks over dairy plant
A United Milk lorry
United Milk hopes to sell the plant as a going concern
Talks are being held to help hundreds of South West dairy farmers who are facing ruin after a milk plant called in receivers.

More than 300 farmers are owed more than 30,000 each for the milk they to supplied United Milk in Westbury, Wiltshire.

Others also risk losing a share of the 12m they invested in the co-operative when it was set up in 2001.

The 45m plant uses modern technology to turn milk into butter and milk powder.

Jobs risk

Milk Link, a farmers co-operative based in Plymouth, is taking part in talks to try and save the Westbury plant.

The National Farmers Union is holding a meeting on Wednesday and hopes to reveal details of an emergency plan.

About 100 jobs are thought to be at risk if the plant - which has an annual turnover of 100m - closes.

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) has been appointed as administrators and there are hopes that the plant can be sold as a going concern.
