The A386 is a heavily used road in Plymouth |
Water engineers isolated a water main which burst in Plymouth, forcing the partial closure of a major route in and out of Plymouth on Saturday. Emergency crews and South West Water staff were called to the site on the A386 Tavistock Road, close to the Derriford roundabout, after the incident at about 0810 BST.
The flood of water tore up a section of road surface in a bus lane, and was 15 centimetres high when the police arrived.
There was severe traffic congestion as a result.
The road was cleared, but repairs to the 24-inch (0.6 metre) main were likely to go on into Saturday night.
About 100 households in the Efford and Hoe areas of the city were warned they may find themselves suffering low pressure or complete loss of water during this time.
Water dispensers were being placed in affected areas.
South West Water apologised for any inconvenience caused.
