Plymouth 'worst for smoking deaths'
Smoky bar
On average 147 people die of lung cancer in Plymouth every year
Plymouth is one of the worst places in the country for deaths caused by smoking, according to a new report.

The study reveals 1,000 deaths a year in the South West are directly caused by smoking.

The report from the South West Public Health Observatory (SWPHO) says those dying from lung cancer or heart disease are up to ten times more likely to have died because they smoked.

And the report shows that more than 91% of lung cancer deaths in Plymouth men, between 1999 and 2001, were linked to smoking.

Vulnerable to illness

The SWPHO said that about 147 people die from lung cancer in the city every year.

There are close to 1,000,000 smokers in the South West and public health teams are emphasising the risks posed to non-smokers.

The report says that on average the children of parents who smoke inhale the equivalent of 60 to 150 cigarettes a year.

And that can make them vulnerable to illnesses such as asthma.
