Hospital plumbing blamed over death
David Bick
David Bick's family are considering legal action
Health and Safety Executive officials are conducting an investigation into the death of a cancer patient at Torbay Hospital from Legionnaire's disease.

An inquest jury concluded on Tuesday that Torquay trading standards officer David Bick, 53, had died of natural causes.

But they said faulty design and installation of a new water system may have contributed to his death.

The inquest heard that Legionella bacteria was found in a tap in Mr Bick's ward.

Water temperature checks to prevent the growth of the bacteria had not been carried out.

The inquest jury returned a verdict of death by natural causes but concluded that unsuitable design, and faulty installation of the plumbing were contributory factors.

Coroner Hamish Turner said it was now a matter for the Health and Safety Executive to pursue those responsible.

Tony Parr, chief executive of South Devon Healthcare Trust, said the verdict was a good one and they would be considering legal action against the contractors who installed the system.

Mr Bick's wife Hillary is considering the verdict and the legal position with her lawyers.
