Councils crack down on dog owners
Cathedral Green in Exeter
Dogs off their lead could be banned from Cathedral Green
Two Devon councils are planning a crackdown on dog owners who allow their pets to foul public areas.

Exeter City Council is proposing to make the city's Cathedral Green a no-go area for dogs off the lead.

Authorities in North Devon, meanwhile, want people to report dog owners who allow their animals to foul public places.

Dogs are already banned from all children's play areas in Exeter, along with some ornamental parks.

Now the city council wants to extend the ban to Cathedral Green to make the area cleaner and safer for visitors.

Telephone hotline

Owners would still be able to walk their pets on a lead when keeping to footpaths, but they would not be allowed on the grass.

Councillors are holding a meeting on Tuesday night to consider whether to make the proposal a byelaw.

In North Devon, the council has started a telephone hotline and is encouraging people to call if they see owners who are not cleaning up after their pets.

Dog wardens are increasing patrols in certain areas and will issue 50 fines to offenders.

Two roadshows are also taking place this month in Barnstaple and Ilfracombe, with local dog experts giving advice on being a responsible dog owner.
