MPs join airport debate
Plymouth city airport
The group of MPs favours Exeter over Plymouth
Proposals for a new airport near Plymouth ran into powerful opposition on Wednesday.

An all-party group of Devon MPs says the plans are a non-starter and Exeter airport should be backed instead.

The group, which does not include any Plymouth MPs, says a new airport in the South Hams, on the edge of Plymouth, would be too expensive and in the wrong place.

The statement says Exeter should be backed as the region's key airport for future investment.

Clear sign

The group of seven MPs, includes the Labour MP for Exeter Ben Bradshaw, the Conservative MP for Tiverton and Honiton Angela Browning and the Liberal Democrat member for North Devon Nick Harvey.

Their statement says they "reject moves to promote either Plymouth or a new airport in the South Hams".

Many business leaders and politicians in Plymouth may disagree but the statement is a clear sign of how decision-makers outside the city view Plymouth's air transport problems.
