Mourners will be invited to plant a tree in memory of their loved ones |
A new woodland burial site opened in Devon on Sunday. But the Yealmpton Burial Ground is not a traditional village churchyard and it aims to reflect the increasing popularity of woodland burial.
The churchyard at Yealmpton became full years ago and since then the only burials available for local people have been outside the parish, which has caused much upset and distress.
Twenty people have already booked their graves in advance.
Environmentally friendly
The new site is at Lower Heddon field, set high up overlooking the estuary of the River Yealm.
Initially the burial ground will be planted with wild flowers.
Friends and families will be invited to plant a tree in memory of the person buried.
It means eventually the field will turn from meadowland to woodland, and should always be protected from development.
Headstones will not be permitted.
Woodland burial is becoming more popular because it is more enviromentally friendly than normal burial or cremation.
