Work is due to start next week on a new recycling centre in Kingsbridge. The site will replace the existing small recycling at the entrance to Torr Quarry with a bigger facility at the bottom of the quarry.
It will be next to the new South Hams District Council transfer station.
The site will be able to accept a wider range of materials including some plastics and should be up at the beginning of July.
Brigade called to gorse fire
Devon Fire and Rescue Service was called out to deal with a gorse fire in Drewsteignton on Dartmoor.
Four fire engines attended the incident on Sunday night.
It follows a series of gorse fires in recent weeks, some of which are being treated as suspicious.
However, police were not required to attend the Drewsteignton incident.
'Fairer charging' for day care services
From Monday, hundreds of people using day care centres in Plymouth will be paying more than �30 a week for services that used to be free of charge.
The city council says it is simply implementing the government's "fairer charging" policy.
Carers in the city say it penalises the most vulnerable people in society.
However, the council said people will not be charged until an assessment is carried out.
New methods to tackle invasive plants
Farmers in Devon could soon have more chance to use natural methods to kill plants such as Japanese Knotweed.
The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has issued a new report which says using fungi or insects to control such invasive plants is more cost-effective and environmentally safer than chemicals.
The report says the method can also be used to control insect pests and plant disease.
But it is not widely used in the country.
Centres offer jobs advice
The Department for Work and Pensions is opening two new Jobcentres in south Devon.
The offices at Newton Abbot and Torquay will offer local people a fully integrated service, including advice on jobs and benefits, all under one roof.
Meanwhile, a new centre for people who would like to return to work is being launched in Plymouth.
Plymouth Returners is part of Plymouth College of Further Education and will provide free careers advice, information, support and training from its new city centre location in Union Street.
Gun amnesty already bearing fruit
More than 30 illegal handguns and a sawn-off shotgun have been handed in to Devon and Cornwall Police in the first week of a national gun amnesty.
Police say they have also had 215 legal weapons, such as shotguns and air rifles, plus 8,000 rounds of ammunition.
The police also received a crossbow, a walking stick gun, a deactivated machine gun and a harpoon.
The amnesty will continue until the end of the month.
