The school said the boys' actions were very dangerous Two boys who had to be rescued by firefighters after taking a shortcut across a frozen lake have been suspended from their Derbyshire school. The 13-year-old pupils at Kirk Hallam Community College, near Ilkeston, got stuck in the centre of the lake outside the school. Fire crews were called to Kirk Hallam Lake at about 1330 GMT on Monday. The school said it was taking tough action to drive home safety warnings about icy weather. Head teacher, Peter Hamer, has suspended the boys for five days. He said: "It was potentially lethal not only for themselves but actually for the people who go in to rescue them. "And that's my real worry that they not only endangered themselves but they endangered other people." Derbyshire Fire and Rescue has warned people to keep off the ice and said the boys had a lucky escape.
