Airport to install wind turbines

East Midlands Airport has been given planning permission to install four 31.5m high (103ft) wind turbines.

The four turbines should produce up to 225kw of electricity each, enough to power 503 houses a year.

An East Midlands Airport spokeswoman said the turbines would generate 10% of the site's energy and would help the airport become carbon neutral by 2012.

The turbines will be at least 800m from the nearest residential property and should be running by late 2008.

Penny Coates, East Midland Airport's managing director, said: "In addition to the four wind turbines, we have increased the proportion of energy that comes from renewable sources and introduced a number of environmental measures...to reduce the impact on the environment.

"The turbines are another very substantial investment in environmental management by the airport."
