Plan to boost safety on railway
Travelsafe officer
The officers can eject but not arrest passengers
Security guards are expected to be used on East Midlands rail services when a new operator takes over.

East Midlands Trains, operated by Stagecoach, will take over routes run by Midland Mainline and the eastern section of Central Trains on Sunday.

Officials have said they plan to bring in "Travelsafe" officers to monitor stations and rail services.

A new facility in Derby is also planned to monitor CCTV footage from stations and trains.

'Crime reduction'

The company also want to install 68 extra CCTV cameras in the East Midlands.

The Travelsafe officers have no power of arrest but can eject troublemakers from trains and stations.

Julie Sedgwick from the firm's sister company South West Trains said the officers had been a success on trains in that region and had reduced low-level crime.

East Midlands Trains has promised faster journey times, extra seats and an additional early-morning train from Derby to London.

The firm is also planning to invest 5m in stations and 26.5m in rolling stock.
