Plea to help train manufacturer
One of the UK's biggest unions has joined senior managers at Bombardier to ask the government to do more to help the Derby train maker.

The union Unite said without future investment in the company, up to 7,500 jobs could be lost forever.

It wants to ensure some of the billions being invested by the government comes to Derby.

At the moment Bombardier's 2,000 staff face an uncertain future with current orders set to finish next spring.

The Intercity 125 model, launched in 1976 is set to be replaced in 2014 and Unite said it was essential Bombardier shares in some of that business.

Adrian Axtell, of Unite East Midlands, said: "Clearly if this contract were to go abroad then it could have a major impact on the local economy."

Colin Walton, of Bombardier Transportation UK, added: "Our big worry is that with the new projects that are out there we could get a further peak in 2014 and we're saying now is the time to plan for that."
