Curtain rises after refurbishment
Derby's Playhouse has re-opened after being closed for refurbishment for almost five months.

The theatre's backstage area has been revamped and disabled access improved as part of the project.

The public was invited to a festive launch party on Saturday, with performances from local schools, actors, dancers and musicians.

The theatre's seasonal production of A Christmas Carol opened on Saturday evening and will run until 20 January.

Theatre spokesperson, Fiona Wallace said: "Much of our refurbishment work has been backstage in the least glamorous areas of the theatre.

"Although the changes have been necessary, artists and theatre craftspeople are eager to put the work they do back on stage for everyone to enjoy.

"Our festive celebration day is our way of saying thank you to everyone who has supported the theatre whilst we have been closed and a fantastic way to mark our reopening."

The theatre's main auditorium is due to be refurbished in 2007.
