Single housing shortage tackled
Younger people in part of Derbyshire are to be given the chance to live independently after a new housing project was given the go-ahead.

Properties in Long Eaton have been given initial approval for conversion into a series of self-contained flats.

The houses, currently unused, will be offered to a social landlord or housing charity to provide 5-10 units.

Erewash Borough Council said there was a pressing need to provide good quality housing for young, single people.

'Great asset'

All potential residents would have the necessary life skills to live independently and the development will be subject to detailed planning permission being granted, the council said.

Councillor Derek Orchard, added: "Our Homeless & Housing Support Team cannot always find single persons accommodation in the Borough.

"We recognise that there is a real local need for single people to have access to high quality rented homes.

"We are now dealing with more enquiries regarding single accommodation than we have the resources to allow for, and this is why the redevelopment of the Cramner Street properties will be a great asset to the borough."
