Review of castle development plan
Elvaston Castle
The council wants to lease the building to a hotel firm
The ombudsman has been called in to look at plans to lease Elvaston Castle country park to a private company.

He is expected to assess the way Derbyshire County Council has handled the project.

Opponents of the plans, who say the castle should remain in public ownership, claim they have not been properly consulted.

The Elvaston Castle Estate Trust, said they hope the ombudsman will force the council to reconsider.

Karen Sims-Neighbour, from the trust, said: "Elvaston Castle country estate and park is a viable proposition and it should be run by the people.

"It should be a charitable trust with profits reinvested in the site.

"With the right management and marketing Elvaston Castle would be a runaway success and there is not need for a private developer."
