New proof of age scheme unveiled
A new proof of age scheme is being launched in Derby to try to stop under-age sales of a range of products.

The city council is introducing the scheme at two secondary schools but hopes eventually to give free cards to all youngsters aged over 12.

Teachers, parents, young people and the police were consulted over the project.

Council leaders said it would provide peace of mind for retailers and make it easier for young people who are old enough to buy certain items.

The cards will initially be introduced to St Martin's School and Bemrose Community School.

Councillor Mike Carr, cabinet member for personnel and direct services, said: "This scheme will make proof of age cards readily available in Derby.

"I am sure they will provide peace of mind for retailers and make it easier for young people who are old enough to buy certain items to do so without embarrassment."
