Work begins on flood prevention
Improvements costing 500,000 are starting on Monday to stop future flooding in a south Derbyshire village.

More than 80 homes were flooded in Hatton in November 2000, when the River Dove burst its banks during a bout of prolonged and heavy rain.

Engineers say the plan is to provide a ring of defences around the village.

Defences have already been built beside the river and work will begin on re-levelling and widening the Salt Brook, to the north and west of Hatton.

Work will also take place at the back of the Nestle factory, and on the west side of Station Road. It is expected to take 22 weeks.

Leader of South Derbyshire District Council Barrie Whyman said that together with a modernised sewage system, the scheme should provide a ring of flood defences around Hatton.
