Derbyshire pupils will visit the Beth Shalom Holocaust Centre

Derbyshire County Council was awarded �26,404 by the Big Lottery Fund to run the "Their Past Your Future" programme.

Pupils from Fairmeadows Primary School, Newhall, will visit the Holocaust Centre at Laxton, near Newark, Notts.

And boxes of artefacts created by libraries and museums staff will then be loaned out to Derbyshire schools.

'Never repeated'

The boxes will include books, such as Anne Frank's Diary, gas masks, uniforms and clothes from the 1940s.

It is hoped that pupils will produce work based on the project and listen to music from the period.

Fairmeadows students will tour the centre, finding out about the consequences of the Holocaust, and meet and interview survivors.

Councillor Alan Charles, Derbyshire's cabinet member for education, said the project was ideally timed to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II this year.

He said: "It is important that young people not only learn what happened during the Second World War but also learn from it to help ensure that the Holocaust is never repeated."
