Safety concerns over park death
Vicci Thomas

A lack of maintenance and safety checks on railings was partly to blame for the death of a Derby schoolgirl, an inquest has decided.

Vicci Thomas, 12, had been playing at Osmaston Park near her home in May last year when heavy cast-iron railings fell on top of her, fracturing her skull.

The jury ruled the death was accidental but maintenance issues played a part.

The Health and Safety Executive is now considering whether to prosecute Derby City Council.

Annual survey

The inquest had been told a council workman checked park railings in the area just hours before they fell.

Since the accident, the city council has removed the railings in the park and replaced them with smaller fencing.

Maurice Burgess, leader of Derby City Council, said: "Since this tragic accident we have instigated a 12-month annual survey of all our boundaries.

"Not just in our parks but in all our buildings, to make sure this does not happen in the future."
