Crackdown on council tax dodgers
People in part of Derbyshire who have not paid their council tax are being warned the debt could be automatically deducted from their wages.

Erewash Borough Council has issued 1,535 liability orders to seek payment of council tax arrears as part of a get-tough policy on non-payers.

The orders mean employers could be forced to make deductions from the debtor's salary.

Since September 2003 the council has brought 6,506 cases before the court.

In April it began bankruptcy proceedings against 11 residents and has recovered 46,000.

A spokesperson for Erewash Borough Council said it will use every means at its disposal to recover debts.
