Asteroid plan lands in Derbyshire
Asteroid (not Ceres)

The first asteroid known to humans, Ceres, will soon be in Derbyshire.

But there is no need for alarm - the asteroid to be located at Furness Vale Primary School is merely a representation of the giant space rock.

The school has been chosen as the site for Ceres as part of a scale model of the solar system to be built in the UK.

The sun will be located at Jodrell Bank radio dish, with other celestial bodies to be scattered across the country.

For example, the Earth will be located at Tytherington High School, in Macclesfield, Cheshire.

Saturn will be at Lancaster Girls' Grammar School, Lancashire.

In astronomy, Ceres is the largest of all the minor planets (asteroids), with a diameter of about 1000km.

It was discovered by the Italian astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi in 1801.
