Twelve students at the University of Derby have fallen ill with mumps, it has been confirmed. A meeting took place at the university's Kedleston Road site on Friday afternoon to discuss how to tackle the outbreak.
It is understood a vaccination programme will start soon.
Surgeries across the East Midlands have recently reported increases in cases of mumps, particularly in people in their late teens and twenties.
The BBC reported last week that the number of cases in the region had leapt from four in the year 2000 to 66 last year.
Health professionals say part of the cause is that many of young adults have missed the MMR vaccination.
