The future of Elvaston Castle is set to be announced. |
Campaigners determined to keep a Derbyshire venue open to the public will hear about its future on Monday. The Elvaston Castle Estates Trust wants to lease the site. A hotel group is believed to be another bidder.
Derbyshire County Council, which owns the site, says leasing the castle to a private developer is being considered.
Campaigners have handed over a petition of 33,000 signatures to Downing Street, calling for the public park to remain open to everyone.
'Not for sale'
Bidding for the historic house and grounds closed last year and the recommended bid is due to be announced.
The schemes from potential partners are to be considered by the cabinet later this month, and by the full council in November.
The council has admitted it needs financial help running the site.
But the authority said it is not selling off the site, and said that public access will be maintained.
Councillor Bob Janes, the council's cabinet member for community services, said: "Elvaston Castle and the grounds are not and have never been for sale.
"We've been clear from the outset that public access to the park must be maintained and ownership of the castle and grounds will remain with the county council.
"We are keen to see the castle and estate restored to its former glory.
"It is not for sale and local people and visitors will continue to enjoy the much-loved facility. Anyone who says anything different is mistaken."
