Private school likely to close
St Elphin's school
St Elphin's is located in Darley Dale
A private school in Derbyshire is to close after a council turned down a bid to build houses in its grounds.

St Elphin's School in Darley Dale is likely to shut at the end of the summer term, according to school officials.

The decision was made after council officials turned down a revised application to build 30 houses on part of the site.

The school needed to sell the land in order to raise part of the 3m it needed to stay open.

It was financially struggling due to falling pupil numbers.

Despite appealing to former students and the local community, fundraisers only managed to raise 48,000.

Planning officials at Derbyshire Dales District council voted 13 to four against plans to build the homes in the grounds on Wednesday night.

Redundancy notices were issued to staff at the school last week.
