Threat to classroom staff's jobs
A number of Derby schools are being forced to cut back on classroom staff because of a shortfall in next year's budgets.

Derby City Council says seven schools are making teaching assistants redundant, after a change in the way special needs staff are funded.

One school, Parkview Primary at Oakwood, says it will still have to lay off six assistants by September.

Head teacher Claire Griffiths said the news increases the pressure on staff.

She said: "In spite of having full numbers on role and in spite of having an underspend of over 4%, we had an unexpectedly poor budget.

"This doesn't allow us to carry on with the full number of teaching assistants.

"We need more money to actually retain a very strong team which has taken five years to build up."
