Cameras to fight business crime

CCTV is installed on a Derbyshire industrial estate
Companies on a Derbyshire industrial estate are joining forces with police to tackle crime.

Firms on the Heanor Gate Industrial Estate have installed a CCTV system that is monitored around the clock.

Police say there were more than 20,000 crimes against businesses across the county last year, accounting for a fifth of all offences.

The system, which is run by former policeman Steve Parker, was funded by the companies on the estate.

Knock-on effects

He says the CCTV cameras are proving successful.

"Crime was reduced by 40% in year one, and businesses that were leaving the industrial park are now coming back."

It is estimated crime against business cost British companies 19bn in 2003.

Business Crime Co-ordinator Samantha Hancock says consumers suffer the knock-on effects.

"In turn premiums go up, and the costs then come back to us as end users."
