Ernie Harbon refused to pay the 400 fine |
A Derbyshire driver who said he would rather go to prison than pay a fine from a speed camera has been jailed for two weeks. Ernie Harbon, 62, says he is protesting about what he claims is the use of the cameras to raise money.
Mr Harbon, from South Normanton, was caught speeding by a mobile camera in Codnor last year.
On Tuesday he was sent to prison for two weeks after again refusing to pay the 400 fine.
Highway Code
Mr Harbon was pictured driving at 38mph in a 30mph zone but claimed the limit was not clearly marked.
The police and Derbyshire Safety Camera Partnership have denied using the cameras as a device to generate revenue.
They also pointed out that it is clearly spelled out in the Highway Code that areas with street lights are always 30 mph zones.
Mr Harbon is expected to spend at least a week in Leicester Prison.
