An East Midlands MP has attacked plans to close four post offices in a Derbyshire town. The MP for West Derbyshire, Patrick McLoughlin, says the decision to close the post offices in Belper would be a real blow to pensioners.
"How on earth can the government give its commitment that pensioners will still be able to collect their pensions from the post office?" Mr McLoughlin said in the House of Commons.
"It is unacceptable that there will only be one post office (in Belper) for 20,000 people."
The Royal Mail says there are too many branches competing for too little business in that area of the county.
There are also plans to close another post office in nearby Matlock Green.
Post Office spokesman Mike Dalton said the closures are in the best interests of residents.
"We feel that if we close the five branches that it will give the other branches a better chance of survival."
