Demolition for city eyesore
plans for Duckworth Square
Derby's Citycape is considering various plans for Duckworth Square
Work has started to tear down a derelict city-centre eyesore in Derby.

Duckworth Square, built in the 1960s and considered an ideal shopping venue when it was constructed, has become rundown in recent years.

Michael Hall, acting chief executive of Derby Cityscape, says redevelopment of the area is part of a 225m regeneration plan for the city.

"People don't walk through the area and we need to develop the area as a thoroughfare," Mr Hall says.

"Retailers gave up because there wasn't enough footfall in the area."

He said Derby Cityscape is considering a number of ideas for the former precinct.

"We are looking for something modern - to demonstrate to the wider community that Derby is willing to develop its city centre.

"People will not come and shop here - so there is only one solution and that is to start again."
