A landfill site in South Derbyshire is closing because it is too full, 15 years after it first opened. Bretby Tip in Newhall is being converted into grassland and a recreation area for the local community.
Every year the tip takes in excess of 40,000 tonnes of rubbish from households in South Derbyshire.
That will now go to the Waste Transfer Station at Raynesway, Derby, and a site in Bradgate, Leicestershire.
Come October, when the site closes, contractors will begin to landscape the area - creating grassland, a wildlife sanctuary and a pond.
The Waste Recycling Group, who are handling the work on behalf of Derbyshire County Council, say it will take two years before that is completed.
Meanwhile the generator which converts the methane gas from the decomposing rubbish into power will remain in place providing electricity for more than 2,000 households.
