Dozens of extra street lights are to be installed at locations around Derbyshire.

It is hoped this will improve safety and reduce crime.

The county council will spend just over 170,000 on 20 new street lighting projects.

Work to install them will begin once an initial project has been completed which involved new lights being installed in 54 locations at a cost of more than 200,000.

Recorded crime

Among the areas in the county to benefit will be Milford Drive in Ilkeston, Jubilee Court in Wirksworth, Ray Street in Heanor and Croft Close in Netherseal.

The locations for new lighting after negotiations with local community safety partnerships to find areas where there were problems of recorded crime.

Councillor Walter Burrows, Derbyshire County Council's cabinet member for public protection and transport, said: "The recent MORI survey of Derbyshire residents revealed that crime is one of the biggest concerns among local communities.

"Most of the places where the extra street lights will be installed are in areas with problems of recorded crime.

"As a result we can make real improvements to the lives of people in these areas."
