Many people living in the Boulton and Sinfin areas have called for speed humps laid in May 2000 to be taken out because they cause damage to vehicles.

The city council is considering the move after nearly three quarters of residents answering a questionnaire called for their removal.

If that is given the go-ahead their installation, modification and final removal will have cost more than �400, 000.

The council has already removed and modified some humps and now it is being proposed that the remaining 80 humps are removed completely.

The Cruise group, which opposed the installation of speed bumps in the first place, felt there were more effective ways to make the area safe.

Thelma Bradshaw from the group, said: "We asked for cameras first of all because we wanted something that was not intrusive.

"These humps are very intrusive causing difficulty and even damaging the bottom of people's cars.

"These had a down-side as well as the obvious up-side."
