Opposition to mining plans
Village protesters
Wildlife expert Roger Wood showed visitors threatened species
Local people have been protesting against plans by UK Coal to resume opencast mining in a village in Derbyshire.

The Shipley West site in West Hallam has regenerated itself over the last ten years, but permission has been given for more digging.

Residents say the work will damage wildlife and destroy their industrial heritage.

Parents, children and dog-walkers turned up to show their opposition to UK Coal's plans in a guided walk on Sunday.

Wildlife expert Roger Wood pointed out to visitors the species which campaigners believe will disappear if open cast mining is given the go-ahead.

Amber Valley Labour MP Judy Mallaber said: "This area would just disappear in terms of all the wildlife - there'll be an effect on the birds, animals and plant-life".

But UK Coal said there will be a substantial amount of land reclamation and long term benefits for the community.

Derbyshire County Council will examine the plans on Monday.
