Full digital switchover under way

Digit Al
Some viewers in south Cumbria will still receive analogue channels

The final switchover to digital television is taking place for the majority of households in Cumbria.

On Wednesday afternoon the county's analogue signal will be switched off, meaning viewers will need a digital-ready television or a set-top box.

Digital UK, which is implementing the switchover, said equipment should be retuned to receive all channels.

Viewers in south Cumbria who use the Winter Hill transmitter will continue to receive analogue until 4 November.

The vast majority of households in the county are thought to have upgraded their equipment ahead of the switchover.

'Responded well'

John Askew, from Digital UK, said: "I'm pleased to report that the technical transition went according to plan and, from today, many more viewers will be able to receive digital TV free via an aerial.

"People in Cumbria have responded really well in adapting to the change and preparing in good time."

The county pioneered the switchover when, in November 2007, the coastal town of Whitehaven became the first area of the UK to go completely digital.

The first full regional switchover took place in the Scottish Borders in November.

Anyone who needs help making the switch can call Digital UK's helpline or check the organisation's website.
